No 429 - Danger Diabolik Director - Mario Bava At last! A completely stupid film I can have a bit of fun with! I have wanted to watch this film since I first saw a still of it in Empire magazine many a year ago. It looked utterly ridiculous. And from the moment I started the disc and was met by a DVD menu of go go dancers and swinging 60s Jazz I knew I was going to love it! The film is completely absurd. It is the work of producer Dino De Laurentiis who also gave the world Barbarella (seriously.... how is this film in the Empire top 500 and not Barbarella! What a criminal injustice! I mean.... just look at Jane Fonda !) - The film has a lot of similarities with Barbarella, the main one being John Phillip Law who plays the masterful thief Diabolik , but who also played blind angel Pygar . This film follows a Kool Kat swinging super thief called Diabolik as he goes about his many adventures and the police set up ever more ridiculous traps to try (and fail) on catching him. Diabolik

Contest! Prizes!

I realize it's en vogue to hate the Oscars these days. But even after a good year like 2007 (No Country For Old Men), it's hard to forgive the last fifteen years of celebrated mediocrity. I like good movies, and I like trashy movies. There are few pictures I don't like. But AMPAS (pronounced amp-ass) seems to prefer formula over feeling. Year after year, Oscar nominated films neither challenge nor titillate. The medium is meant to entertain, right? My uniquely unoriginal challenge is a classic contemporary CONTEST : Predict most accurately 2009's Academy Award winners and I will supply a MODEST PRIZE! You Must: post your answer in the comments section of this blog post post your prediction for every nominated category in the interest of protecting your privacy, email me at gmsgoforth@gmail.com, explaining which post is yours. you will need to do this to claim your prize! Snow Mountains

Image
My Mom is no longer able to drive so I take her where she needs to go when she does, and I often run errands for her when she is unable to go with me. Today she was needing me to get her a few items from the grocery store. I took the camera along for the trip so you could go with me for the ride. The red thing you see here is the top of a fire hydrant. It is nearly buried under the snow that has been piled at the side of the street by the snow plows. This sidewalk has been cleared..... sort of. Someone didn't get his or her car moved off the street before the plow went through. They are going to need a shovel to get it out now. Whoever parked on top of the snow here may end up with their back tires stuck when they try to drive out of that . Piles of snow are at all edges of the parking lot at one of the local churches. At many intersections, it is very difficult to see if any traffic is approaching before pulling out to turn because of the walls of snow at the corners. At the g

Trial Run

Here's a short compilation. I realize it's kinda ghetto with having to physically start the next song, and the segues won't be perfect but if you can start the next as the previous one ends you'll retain some of that. The Girly Version: 1... 2... 3... 4... 5... 6...

Cybermixtape

Image
Cybermixtape.... That will probably be the name of my post-electro-nintendo-synthpop group. Anyway, I am lamenting the loss of the mixtape. When I really got into music (around 1990) it was through the magic of mixtapes. I had access to the KHSU library of CDs and I would go up there and tape songs that my friends were talking about. My aunts would loan me tapes or friends would suggest songs to go track down. I would make mixtapes of songs I had never heard based upon recommendation. It didn't take long to cultivate the practice. Initially I made them for myself, but when you start to make more friends, especially girlfriends, they become a heartfelt gift. A sublime exchange. Mixtapes were a stepping stone from the radio generation that spawned my own. They afforded personalization, but carried the varietal tone and flow of radio. What I loved was that I could follow Green Day with Holst, The Offspring, or Dre Dog and it worked. It was both more free to interpretation and more con

More Short Film Extravaganza

Here's another terrific free site . No, sorry, wrong NFB. Canada's National Film Board , however is the world leader in indie animation. They've produced dozens of little-seen Oscar nominated shorts. I haven't explored this site much but they seem to host a lot of stuff. Neighbours is quite good. It doesn't look they have Madame Tutli-Putli available on their site, but I found it here . Really great, if you have 17 minutes. Enjoy!

Dancing and Drumming

Now here is someone who is having a good time! His name is Tom Chambers, and he is a British actor perhaps best known for his role in the BBC medical drama Holby City. Tom's interest in dance led him to recreate the sequence from the 1937 film Damsel In Distress in which Fred Astaire tap dances with a drum kit. This is a video of that recreation. Watching this, you can just see how much fun he is having. Don't miss his dazzling, celebratory "I DID IT!" smile at the end. Wow!

Thematic Photographic 34: Simple

Image
Haylee December 2003 We had the joy of babysitting our great-niece, Haylee (2 years old at the time), in our new home. We were in the process of putting in a lawn in the backyard and had dirt dug up and piled up everywhere. Haylee helped water the potted plants and citrus trees, then filled the bird feeders with seed. Her "work" done, she found a hill her size, filled a pail with dirt and wanted to make mud pies. Her mother had sent her over in pretty blue (and clean) clothes with her hair all done up and a ribbon to match. There was no way I was going to give her back to her Mom all muddied, so I suggested we make playdough and she agreed. We went to the kitchen and I helped her mix up a batch of playdough from which she made "cookies" and "pies". When her Mom picked her up she took the playdough and went home happy (and clean). No computers, no videos, no i-pods, nothing fancy, nothing expensive... just some simple homemade playdough. It's

Armadillo Eggs

Image
No, they're not "eggs" at all, but they are so good, you'll want to make some for Super Bowl! I based this recipe loosely on the one you'll find here , although there are many other recipes you can find on the internets. Halve some jalapenos, stuff each half with cheese (I used hot pepper Jack). Fold some sausage around the jalapeno, roll in bread crumbs and bake at 350F for 25-30 minutes, or until sausage is cooked through. I'm sending this recipe over to Lori at The Recipe Girl for her Ultimate Super Bowl Recipe Party Smackdown!

Super Single-Bite Tostadas

Super Single-Bite Tostadas Ingredients: Flour tortillas, refried beans, salsa, shredded cheese, grape tomatoes, sour cream, cilantro Using a 2" cookie cutter, cut 18 rounds from flour tortillas. Place on a baking sheet lined with parchment. Place a teaspoon of refried beans on each tortilla round. Top with salsa, shredded cheese and half of a grape tomato. Bake at 350F for 8-10 minutes until hot and cheese has melted. Remove from oven and place on serving tray. Top with sour cream and chopped cilantro. Serve immediately. I'm sending this recipe over to Julie at Peanut Butter and Julie . She's hosting a Super Bowl Showdown!

What's the point

Now that this I've been reading about how to write blogs, or at least how to make them interesting, I've been thinking that maybe I take too broad of an approach on this one. But the fact is, I don't know enough about any one subject to pontificate freely or frequently on it. Therefore, for the time being, you're gonna see a host of topics that I find mildly or terrifically interesting. Mostly it'll be on movies, music and games. But there will also be food, anecdotes, random web things, personal musings, stuff about my life or whatever the hell I feel like. In the future I may branch off and devote a blog to my original idea for this one: Post-apocalyptic and dystopian fiction. If this interests you, then let me know. For the time being I'll just include it all here for everyone to pick through. This potpourri approach should allow me to post frequently enough to keep you interested... we'll see.

Seeking Refuge

Image
For the last month or so, this sparrow has been roosting at night on the posts which support the awning over our side porch. Sometimes he is on one side and sometimes he is on the other. He is there by the time I get home from work at night, and he is still there in the morning when my son leaves for school. He disappears during the day and then reappears again in the evening. I feel sorry for him out there. He looks so cold. I don't know of much to do for him though. He used to fly away whenever we went in and out of that door, but lately he has just been staying put. I guess he has decided that the cold is more of a threat to him than we are. I wrote a haiku poem about him. Seeking Refuge Under the awning-- a huddled bird seeks refuge from winter's cold grasp .

Elk Round Steak

Image
My crockpot spends most of its life on a closet shelf. I wish I had counter space to keep it out all the time so I'd remember to use it more often! I've never been disappointed with a meal that's come out of a crockpot. With wild game, you sometimes get a piece of meat that isn't quite tender enough; and because wild game is leaner than most beef, sometimes it will be dry. When in doubt, I use the crockpot. I put an elk round steak in the crockpot today topped with a can of cream of mushroom soup (I know, I know... but it makes the best gravy). I sliced up half an onion and three cloves of garlic and put that on top. Then I poured in about a half cup of red wine and sat back and waited for the aroma to begin! Half the fun of using a crockpot is when you leave the house to do errands and return to the wonderful aroma that fills the house! Compared to beef, elk is lower in calories, total saturated fat, total fat, total monosaturated fat, and higher in protein, iron, p

Death is... whimsical... today.

No 227 - Leon Director - Luc Besson I have been rubbish. I humbly apologise. It has been over a week since I last posted on here and my excuses are feeble. I could maybe blame the TV series I've been watching ( 30 Rock and Weeds are the main offenders) or the fact that I've been watching films which aren't on the list ( Hook and Son of Rambow .... Naughty me). But all this will change now I promise you. Please don't give up on me yet. I have bought some new films and have a fresh vigour for the film blogging world. So let us look at today's choice... Leon is an odd little contradiction of a film. On one hand it really is quite dark and gritty, and yet on the other hand it is a bonkers riot of OTT excess. But it is very very good. So... before I begin talking about the bonkers aspects to this film let us look at the gritty realism. Whilst the violence is a key sign of the gritty realism (hell, a 4 year old child is shot dead in the first 30 minutes!) the big thin

Cute

I have vague memories of this Johnny Depp flick: Benny & Joon. Remember that? Of course you don't. But they ripped this off. Speaking of Chaplin... The first special features. And if that doesn't move you go watch some Chaplin. He's easily the best pre-sound movie-man.

Sweet sweet mail day

Image
I definitely wasn't expecting so much fun in one day! And you, the lucky reader, gets to mobile blog read along with me! Envelope and little box contained lots of inexpensive D&D miniatures. Yes...i'm a nerd. Trying to match up some minis to new 4e characters is fun. Air genassi swordmage coming up! The medium box was a sweet buy from another member of skullbrain.org . First the deliciously cheap Marusan Satan Beetle. Fun! Then a completely transparent Medicom (?) Sharkman suit that should go nicely on my KWII clear cyborg. The nerd continues. The final big box is from everyone's favorite...Celga! Since I had this one shipped via SAL instead of the very prompt EMS, I actually forgot about it. So it was like Santa just walked in with this one! It contains the set of Marusan originals that I wrote about a few weeks ago. I'm stoked about the clear, beer bellied Ultraman ripoff in particular. (He's at the top right) Great mail day!
