Thoughts on La Strada

Image
-A naive young (Giulietta Masina) is sold by her impoverished mother to the brutish strongman (Anthony Quinn) to replace her previously sold sister Rosa, now dead. The two go on the road as part of his show, which consists of puffing his chest until a chain breaks and some comedy stuff. -Giulliette Masina is like the female Chaplin. Her character here, often going from silly and clownish to depressed and miserable, an abused stooge to Anthony Quinn's asshole one-man circus, and you just want to give her a hug, she's just so sad. She'll smile at the strangest times, this delirious smile that could either lead to a laugh or a cry. -Anthony Quinn's character, as mentioned, is a douchebag. Although Masina is eager to help and learn, he still relies on outright cruelty to train her to be a good assistant, and rarely, if ever, treats her kindly. Quinn makes a good tough guy, though. -A lighthearted tone even as situations get direly depressing, and a simple story that ge

Can South Park be cute?

The answer is yes.

Oh, god, they're hideous!

Tell me, guy who photoshopped this picture to such gross lengths: can we not agree that Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp have aged extremely well ? Are we really at a stage where we have to airbrush publicity stills of movies starring very prolific actors because they're over 29? Terribly sorry I've not written anything to sufficiently blow your minds, as I often do (ahem). I've been busy moping about the less-than-two-weeks-impending school year, in which I will continue my run of mediocre grades and slight social pariah. So yeah. In honor of such, I'm, like, talking about the best high school movies. So...suggestions, take it to the comments, yo. (now, I know I did this one other time, and I forgot to actually write the post, but fuck you, I have a reason for this! Don't back sass me!)

Have you ever tried... not being a mutant?

Image
No 432 - X-Men 2 Director - Bryan Singer So, for the first time in this little blog, I jump straight into the middle of a trilogy as the original X-Men isn't deemed up to scratch. The only shame is we miss out on the wonderful little introduction to Magneto which I love because it sets a wonderfully bleak tone to the entire trilogy. Instead, however, we get a truly epic assassination attempt in the White House as Nightcrawler whooshes in and attempts a presidential attack . The pace is super fast as clouds of blue smoke show the mutant getting ever closer to its prey. What is impressive about these opening scenes is that they really play with the idea of teleporting , the way that he can vanish mid kick and appear else where. It is an exciting dynamic which would be exhau sting for a whole film, but for a few frantic scene setting minutes - it is brilliant. Bryan Singer's X-Films have excellent introductions. And it is very pleasant indeed to actually see Alan Cumming in a g

Miranda Kerr Spanish Vogue September 2010

Image
Have you seen Victoria's Secret Angel Miranda Kerr on the cover of Spanish Vogue September 2010 issue? She looked stunning and I love her fashion styles for the magazine spreads. The inside pages of the said magazine shows Miranda Kerr in chic spaghetti-strapped dress and vibrant lime green one-piece bikini. Julianne Moore Controversial Bulgari Ads

Image
The first batch of Julianne Moore's Bulgari Ads was released last January. I didn't heard any violent reactions for the ads back then. However, just recently, I read a news article from Telegraph that the guardians of decorum in Venice said that a billboard of Julianne Moore who posed naked with Bulgari handbag and two lion cubs is "inappropriate". What's your opinion on this controversy?

The tote bag that has been carried by Ali was co-designed by by Edun and Vuitton. The latest Louis Vuitton Core Values ad was shot in South Africa where Bono and Ali disembarked from a small airplane. Carrying a “Every journey began in Africa” tag line, this ad will appear in September on daily newspapers and in October on fashion magazines. Photo Source: WWD

check it out! dannon worked hard this weekend and made our little courtyard so dreamy! we now have a hammock, a little table with chairs, sweet globe lights in our tree, and a cozy fire pit. we even have a super friendly neighbor kitty who likes to come visit us and have long conversations. ...bringing much distress to our indoor-only chloe cat. the big tree in our yard is home to a little family of black phoebe's who are so cute to watch! they love the bird bath i made for them {a measly glass pie plate on a chair} and they sing us pretty songs in the morning. even chloe cat has fallen in love {well, okay, she would rather eat them than swoon over them with me, but she's happy all the same}. now our yard is the perfect spot to hang out reading or having a nice dinner! so now that it's all set up, who wants to come over? ps - don't forget to spread the love ! i just met a new neighbor thanks to melissa's challenge. i can't wait to see how a little extr

Thoughts on The Red Riding Trilogy

Image
-A crime drama delving into murder, obsession, and corruption, spanning nine years. Stars, among others, Andrew Garfield, Sean Bean, David Morrissey, Patty Considine, and Mark Addy, and consisting of three parts (In the Year of Our Lord 1974/80/83) by three different directors (Julian Jarrold, James Marsh, Anand Tucker). -The first part, 1974, follows a young reporter (Andrew Garfield) assigned the story of a young girl gone missing, then murdered, thinking he has an editorial on his hands when he uncovers other murders of that nature, but finds himself captive of a layers-deep conspiracy among the Yorkshire police. -A grim piece, filmed in grainy 16 mm and color-schemed to dullness, even when people wear bright clothes. Nonetheless, Jarrold ruthlessly immerses you in this hopeless, cigarrette-stained 70s world, you can smell the cheap cologne and sweat in a bar, the burnt garbage of a destroyed gypsy camp, the sleazy cleanness (yeah...) of a nice house with lots of secrets. -Providing

Literal space opera (like one with singing) needs some money, so get on that

Specifically, they need 'experienced grantwriters' to finish production on a thing called 'K'ai, Death of Dreams'. He, composer Richard DeCosta, put out an ad on Craigslist, released some of the music, and the synopsis: K'ai is a young Uadaman (alien), and though sick and frail physically, has a mind, sharp and clear, has mastery over his dreams, and is in contact with an alien presence through them. He is, however, not special. He is not chosen. K'ai is quite simply the first to discover the truth about the origins of his race: The fact that they were created many thousands of years ago, for the purpose of slavery, and the first to put together the thousands of years old puzzle of how to escape their current spiritual capture. As slaves, K'ai's ancestors were treated cruelly by their masters, the Garx, who were viewed as gods. Although initially the Uadaman made the lives of the Garx easier and richer, the slaves eventually became unruly and ultima

Rod Serling long-lost interview Part 1

Have you got any plans, Jim? Do you want us to find a cure and save the world or just fall in love and fuck? Plans are pointless.

Image
No 454 - 28 Days Later Director - Danny Boyle So, somewhere in the cruel laboratories of Cambridge Sylvester Stuart is Clockwork Orange- ing chimps for some reason (seriously... what is the experiment?) and the activists are not happy. Thusly they release the rage infected monkeys and all the shit goes down. So begins this amazing little apocalypto -drama. For all the visceral introduction, cut editing, strobey lights and salivating primates, the post title moments are wonderfully still and quiet. Cillian Murphy (beautiful face wild wild eyes) plays Jim who wakes up naked in an isolated hospital. Looking at his hair he either had some kind of head surgery or he is a trendy Shoreditch wanker . What appears to have happened is that Jim has woken up in the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse (even though they're Rage infected.... and not zombies) - this fact is beautifully portrayed by shots of Jim walking through abandoned London. I know this has been done in America with I Am

Thoughts on Penelope

Image
-A girl (Christina Ricci), thanks to a generations-old family curse, is born with a pig snout and ears. Put into isolation for 20-something years, with her family sending her a constant barrage of suitors (hoping to break the curse), who all go running when they finally see her, she grows weary of the constant rejection and loneliness. And then comes Johnny (James McAvoy), a plant by Lemon (Peter Dinklage), a reporter who lose his eye in a quest to get a picture of Penelope when she was a baby, who...yeah. -Why are people so horrified by Penelope, anyway? You can't see the years from under her hair, and the nose cannot take away from the fact that she's Christina fucking Ricci. If I saw her in the street, I wouldn't give a shit, because it's so fucking inconsequential. This is, like, the definition of Hollywood Homely. -Richard E. Grant plays the kindly Dad. He is also awesome. As a general rule. And here. -A cute, not really funny, but pleasant movie.

No 444 - Hairspray Director - John Waters At long fucking last! I had vague memories of a film in which a bomb was hidden in a wig. I watched it when very young and that moment was all I remembered. I should have realised it would be Hairspray.... John Waters is, after all, the batshit crazy king of very dark and filthy humour. Before we go on. Can I just say how much I love John Waters. I mean, with his slicked back hair and his tiny thin moustache he kinda looks like a dapper paedophile from the 20's. But he is so sleazily cool. Considering I can't think of John Waters without thinking of Pink Flamingos (or Selma Blair with insane breasts ) I'm surprised by quite how sweet this film is. I think the main thing is that this is set in the early 60's - before Beatlemania and when we still enjoying the early days of Rock and Roll and riding the wave of the 50's. This means we get some excellent music, clothes and cars in bubblegum vibrant colour. It is Americana. H

Richard, I cannot go with you or ever see you again. You must not ask why. Just believe that I love you. Go, my darling, and God bless you.

No 18 - Casablanca Director - Michael Curtiz Another massive classic film that - for reasons unknown - I had never watched until now. I think I thought it would always be very schmaltzy and had therefore avoided it. I love to be proven wrong. Which is good, because it happens a lot. We find ourselves in Casablanca, the cultural melting pot and pretty corrupt town occupied by those wishing to leave Europe and those rotten Nazis. At the centre of it all - the place to be - is Rick's bar where everyone comes to have a jolly wonderful time and drink away their troubles. And there are a lot of troubles. It is a kind of 'limbo' town in that everyone there is just waiting to leave... and it creates a wonderfully strange atmosphere. Into this limbo town come two people Laszlo - a concentration camp escapee - and Ilsa, his wife. Only.... Ilsa and Rick have a shared past. Thus we have our story, a love triangle in a seedy lawless town. But, this is a film where the characters draw

Martin, it's all psychological. You yell 'barracuda', everybody says 'Huh? What?' You yell 'shark', we've got a panic on our hands...

No 5 - Jaws Director - Steven Spielberg I recently went to see the marvellously stupid Piranha 3D (well worth a trip to the cinema, even if you will be shafted by 3D ticket prices for a film that is barely 3D) and I thought that there was only one film that you can really watch after a pretty stupid Jaws homage. That film is Jaws. I think, sometimes, I overlook Spielberg and forget that he is an amazing director. He just becomes one of these names, one of the 'brand' directors and you forget that his films are massive, fabulous and really very influential. Sometimes in less than obvious ways. You also forget just how much violence (and nudity) Spielberg seems to be able to squeeze into his films without the ratings going up - and how many genuine scares there are (Ben Gardner's boat being the big classic example). But yet there are two aspects to this film which will remain Spielberg's triumphs (even though one of them isn't really his). Firstly the dolly zoom. Y

Thoughts on The Girlfriend Experience

Image
-An escort who specializes in 'the girlfriend experience'--providing feigned emotional intimacy with her clients on top of sexual, a literal companion--goes about her job and her boyfriend, a personal trainer, over the background of the 2008 economic crisis and election. -Sasha Grey. She is a porn star. This has been the main gimmick the ads have pushed. It would imply that there's tons of sexay times to be had in this, which is just not true. She's naked once in the entire movie, and it is in an entirely non sexual context. Oh, sure, skimpy lingerie here and there, but for the most part, director Steven Soderberg (my latest director obsession) does not exploit the fact that she's an (ahem) adult actress. Getting that out of the way. -Anyway, I'm mixed about her performance. Her line delivery can, at times, be brutally flat (such as when she has an argument with her boyfriend), and at others, she can excellently balance the coldness of her profession and the con

Graduate Schools Trip, and Come Visit! I'm Having a Giveaway!!

Image
My older son and husband flew to Florida last week to visit a couple of graduate schools that my son is considering attending next year.  They took some pictures that I thought I'd share with you. taking off hotel where they stayed the view from the hotel a cool palm tree (probably not too exciting to those of you who live in Florida, but to those of us who see mostly elm, oak, and maple trees, palm trees are interesting) on campus at one of the schools my son a pier at a nearby beach This is an Italian restaurant where they dined one evening. Although I don't know for sure, I would imagine that the tables inside were those cute little bistro sets , you know, the ones with chairs made of curlicue wrought iron and a round table top on an iron pedestal. coming in for a landing I'm sure some of you noticed that there was a link there under the pictures to an online furniture site.  That site is one of the over 200 sites that are part of CSN stores.  A while back, some of you m
