The Yard Bunny and Lilac Birds (Spring Poems)

Image
The Yard Bunny The yard bunny is lying lazily on the ground, because he can, on a whim, when there's no one around. I like the way he lets his legs stretch out behind him. I envy him there basking in the sun. No demands on his time. No work to be done. Simplicity divine.  Peace so sublime. New grass and violets poke amidst the gravel all around. Soaking up the sun is where you'll find him. *   *   *   *   * Lilac Birds Lilac birds perch in purple clumps flocking together at the top of the bush. Feathers or flowers? Purple plumes? or purple blooms? It's hard to say sometimes when shove comes to push .

Smiley Sunday---Sunny Walk in the Park

Image
These are a few of the things that made me smile today. lovebirds--a pair of mourning doves on the telephone wire buds on the tree branches crocuses in a neighbor's yard buds peeking out on my daffodils this black squirrel who chattered at me because he didn't like me taking his picture a sea of pine cones that crunched under my feet a bird's nest made out of bits of a plastic bag---trash thrown away by man and made into something useful by a bird the sun was shining when I walked through the park today If you'd like to participate in Smiley Sunday, click the badge below .

A Lesson in Furnace Repair

Last night, while I was working at the library, my husband came home from work and discovered that the heat wasn't on in our house. For some reason, the furnace had stopped working. He called the furnace repair guy who said he could come out to the house right away to fix it or wait until this morning to come. Then he said it would be an extra $100 to come last night because it was after hours. Not seeing the sense in paying an extra $100, my husband asked him to come out this morning. So we drank hot tea and layered on extra sweatshirts to keep away the chill that was gradually overtaking our house. (The temperature is still in the 20's outside here today.) The repairman came bright and early this morning to see what the problem was. He discovered that a bird had made its way down through the chimney on our roof to the furnace. It had managed to land on or in the whirring fan of the furnace motor where it not only ended its life, but also effectively shut down our furnace...

Ringside Seat

Gabcast! Dancing With Daisy #50 - Ringside Seat Click the play button above to listen to me read this poem. Ringside Seat From his desk where he worked, he had a free ticket and a ringside seat to the daily window circus that performed in the bird feeder outside. With great delight, he watched the birds who, like trapeze artists in bright flashy clothes, flew gracefully from the tree in the yard, swooping through the air, alighting gently on the perch of the feeder. At first he scowled when the squirrels arrived. Like clowns wearing gray fur suits with white underbellies, they climbed and jumped and bumbled about, twitching their tails, stealing seed from his birds and each other. He chased them away when he could. He rigged the feeder trying to block their path, but like clowns, they were smarter than they looked. Funny, furry acrobats with whiskers and shiny beady eyes, they flipped and flew. They scampered on wires, sliding here, pulling themselves there, clinging, cli...
