Filling gaps - Bolo will return

Image
Working a lot these past couple days... and really want to watch a Barry Prima/Chris Mitchum film tonight before bed, but I haven't forgotten about all you Bolo lovers! While I am working (and not working) on a review for Chinese Hercules, here is a tribute video from YouTube with some pretty terrible music. Can I say though, I am pretty fucking pumped to watch him in TC2000 with Billy Blanks

#71: The Merchant of Venice

Image
Michael Radford, the Oscar-nominated director for Il Postino , put together an adaptation of this classic Shakespearean play for film in 2004. Wikipedia lists this as the first full-length sound film adaptation of a Shakespeare play since most other versions were videotaped for television. What I can vouch for sure is that director Michael Redford keeps the dialogues very close to the actual material of the play thus giving it a very authentic 17th century feel with phrases such as 'Hear thee', 'inexecreable cur' amongst others. It would be fair to admit that if you studied in ICSE in India, the movie is a constant throwback to the Selina Publishers textbook of the play that you would've had in the X Std. While The Merchant of Venice counts as a comedy in Shakespearean history, there is an unmistakeable layer of tragedy that strikes the two key characters in the play. In one of the first opening scenes we learn how Antonio (Jeremy Irons)is 'aweary of the world&#

thoughts on the oscars.

Image
did you see the awards?  i don't normally get too into the oscars, but i have two things to say this year: 1.  i am completely in LOVE with cate blanchett's dress!  i normally don't care about the dresses at all.  sure they're all pretty, or really weird, but i have never wanted one of the dresses before... until now.  this dress, oh this dress!  it's just gorgeous.   2. why was everyone so harsh towards james franco?  all night i saw tweet after tweet of people dogging on him, but it seemed pretty clear that he was nervous and more than a little intimidated to stand in front of ALL the experts in his field, plus billions of viewers across the world {talk about pressure}.  just because he has a job performing in front of a camera means that he should be charismatic and outgoing all the time?  not to mention, i'm sure he was pretty distracted having his own nomination at the end of the evening.  i read recently that james franco got into acting as a way to over

Banana Bread

Image
Everyone's made banana bread before, right? Um, not me. Not until this past week. As a matter of fact, I'd never even tasted it. *Gasp* But then, a couple of Saturdays ago, we hung out with an old friend and his girlfriend and she gifted us with a banana walnut loaf to take home. I was hooked. Hooked, I tells ya. When we ran out, I eyed the bananas on top of my refrigerator and decided to try my hand at it. I had no walnuts in the house, so I made the first one with pecans: It was really tasty, but dried out by Day 2. Steve suggested adding another banana the next time, both for flavor and moisture. I did and it worked beautifully. I had also bought walnuts by then, so, voila: Absolutely delicious. Moist, with a much more intense fruit and nut flavor than the first. I ate three pieces yesterday morning and could have had more if I didn't practice some restraint. Banana Bread Ingredients 4 bananas 1 stick of butter, melted 1 egg, beaten 3/4 cup light brown sugar

Jennifer Lawrence Pictures

Image
Jennifer Lawrence was born in Louisville, Kentucky. She has 2 older brothers, Ben and Blaine, sister-in-law Meredith, and her parents are Gary and Karen Lawrence. Jennifer, known to her friends and family as "Jen", was discovered in New York City at the age of 14. Before Jennifer became an actor, she was involved in cheerleading, field hockey, softball, and modeling, none of which she held a passion for. In the spring of 2004, she traveled to New York City and set up a few auditions with talent and modeling agencies. After conducting her first cold read, the agents told her mother that "it was the best cold read by a 14- year-old they had ever heard", and tried to convince her mother that she needed to spend the summer in Manhattan. After leaving the agency, Jen was spotted by an agent in the midst of shooting an H&M ad and asked to take her picture. The next day, that agent followed up with her and invited her to the studio for a cold read audition. Again, the

What would you do if you were stuck in one place and every day was exactly the same, and nothing that you did mattered?

No 259 - Groundhog Day Director - Harold Ramis Let me begin by saying MAN I LOVE BILL MURRAY! I don't think I can state that enough. He is someone who is so intensely brilliant in just about everything he does. He lifts the energy of a scene into something that bubbles and zings with comedy, whilst he himself can remain droll and deadpan throughout. This is a man who's minorest cameo can move a film from being pretty good, to being properly chucklesome . I'm aware I've said this a lot....but he is great. It is however, necessary for the lead to be as charismatic and as joyous to watch as Murray, because he is up against the very energy sapping nothingness that is Andie McDowell.... a women so dull she makes Hugh Grant look exciting in 4 Weddings... So, it is to Murray's credit that he manages to keep the film going along, but also make McDowell's character seem less of a wet blanket than she makes herself look... But, onwards to the film. Let me begin by sayi

good deeds ~ stand with planned parenthood

Image
as i'm sure many of you in the united states have heard, the house of representatives just voted to ban planned parenthood from all federal funding, and it is now headed to the senate.  i try to keep politics off my blog since it's such an enraging issue in so many ways, but i just couldn't let this one slip by.  how absurd is it that the government is taking away funding from one of the best organizations our country has?!  how can they care so little about the one in five women who receives health services from planned parenthood for a wide range of health issues?!  90% of the health care provided for women, children, and even men, at planned parenthood is for birth control, prenatal care, cancer screenings, hiv screenings, and educational services, to name a few.  if this bill gets passed, these vital and affordable services will be removed from public access.   of all the stupid, selfish, corrupt things our government does, this has got to be at the top.  i'm so sh

Thoughts on the fucking Oscars

Kirk Douglas and Banksy are in cahoots. I fucking know it. When the King's Speech won, I'm not gonna lie, me and my sister lost our cool for a second. Some words were said, some feelings were hurt, some couches mutilated. One funny thing I saw on the Film Rejects Live Blog, during Kirk Douglas's epic adventure: "He's gone rogue!" Javier Bardem's clip was heartbreaking, dude. That is all.

#70: Never Talk To Strangers

Image
Antonio Banderas and Rebecca De Mornay star in this 1995 movie made by Peter Hall. Dr. Sarah(Rebecca) who deals with hardened criminals as a police psychiatrist runs into Tony (Antonio) at a mall who asks her out. Dr. Sarah takes time but does say yes to the persisting Tony who is portrayed as a smooth and suave worker who knows his red wine from white. In a predictable turn of affairs, Tony's seductive wares become too strong for Sarah to resist and she gives in. Soon enough, she starts receiving threatening anonymous phone calls and letters and her pet cat is also murdered. The disturbing trend hits a peak when her own obituary is placed in a newspaper. The movie is about how Dr. Sarah comes to terms with this anonymous person who seems hell bent on throwing her life out of order. It is a plot that has been done to death and only a brilliant climax could've saved the day for Never Talk to Strangers . As a viewer though, you knew it wasn't going to happen. And so the movie

Roast Chicken with Lemons

Image
When I lived near a Costco, I used to buy the roasted chickens. They were $5.99 if I remember correctly. They were tender, moist, and huge ! We'd have plenty for a few dinners and a big bowl of chicken and pasta salad. With the nearest Costco now three-and-a-half hours away, I've taken to roasting my own chickens. I thought I had found the perfect recipe , but have recently found one that I like better over at Mari's blog. This is a method rather than a recipe, (and although we don't eat the skin), it will give you a beautiful crispy skin with moist, tender meat laced with a delicate lemon scent and flavor. Here is the link to the original recipe. In reading this recipe, I had to smile at what I thought was just a tad of hyperbole where it reads " Close up the opening with toothpicks or with trussing needle and string. Close it well, but don't make an absolutely airtight job of it because the chicken may burst". Really? An exploding chicken? I personally

Sasha Barrese Wallpapers

Image
Alexandra "Sasha" Barrese is the daughter of actress and model Katherine Barrese. Katherine was a month shy of 16 years old when she gave birth to baby Sasha. The two lived in Maui, Hawaii and soon moved to Paris, France. There, Katherine continued to model and take Sasha to work with her. Sasha got a lot of early modeling experience by going to the photo shoots with her mom. In 1989, the pair got their debut acting roles in the movie Homer and Eddie (1989). Katherine and little Sasha went on to star as the younger and older versions of a character named Jezebel in 1990's Jezebel's Kiss (1990). This film was the only role in which Sasha is credited by her real name, Alexandra Barrese. Katherine worked hard to put her little girl through good private schools. Pre-teen Sasha attended Ojai Private School in Ojai Valley, California and graduated middle school in 1995. She continued on to Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts and graduated high school in 1999. She did som

Cartoons that shaped my childhood 3: Teen Titans

Image
I'm so thoughtful, I'm even linking back to other additions. That's how nice I am! 1: Recess 2: Xiaolin Showdown Oh, I know, as if you care. Anyway, thus far I've covered Disney Channel and WB shows, so now we must move on to the granddaddy of my upbringing, Cartoon Network. They're so happy for me. Okay, so, surely you're at least half-aware of DC Comics, yes? Batman and Superman and all the good, not-stupid-Jean-Gray ones? Well then, you must know who Robin is. Even if you've never heard of Doom Patrol, Young Justice, or Detective Comics, I assure you, you've heard of Batman & Robin. Well, little did you scallywags (I'm trying it out) know, Robin left Batman scratching his Batnipples to lead the Teen Titans. And then he went on to become Nightwing. But that's not important right now. Bitch. Enough boring-ass exposition. Teen Titans was a cartoon that premiered in the early Naughties (that's its name now. Deal with it.) on Cartoon Netwo

Butler went on to attend Glasgow University, where he studied to be a lawyer/solicitor. He was president of the school's law society thanks to his outgoing personality and great social skills. His acting career began when he was approached in a London coffee shop by actor Steven Berkoff, who later appeared alongside Butler in Attila (2001/I) (TV), who gave him a role in a stage production of Coriolanus. After that Butler decided to give up law for acting. He was cast as Ewan McGregor's ch

Abigail Breslin Pictures

Image
It's not surprising that Abigail Breslin, the tiny, serious, slightly eccentric Bo in M. Night Shyamalan's Signs (2002), comes from an acting family - her older brother is child-actor Spencer Breslin. It's clear from her amazingly strong and true performance in that movie that she is no stranger to the movie-making process. A native New Yorker born in that city in 1996, Breslin has been in front of the camera since the age of three, making commercials until eventually cast by Shyamalan to play Mel Gibson's daughter in Signs (2002). Breslin's performance in Signs (2002) garnered her great praise and earned her work on television as well as additional movie roles, including in Raising Helen (2004), in which Breslin had the treat of acting alongside her real-life brother Spencer, and became friends with star Kate Hudson. As she matured, she became a much sought after actor, and has gone on to win numerous awards for her performances, not to mention an Oscar nomination
