What One Man's Life Could Be Worth -- Music Monday

Image
According to the site,  Holidays for Everyday , which has a list of all sorts of obscure days set aside to celebrate or honor one thing or another, yesterday, March 13th, was Good Samaritan Day. Most have probably heard the story of the  Good Samaritan , the parable Jesus told as an answer to the question, "And who is my neighbor?"  In the story, the Good Samaritan showed mercy on a stranger in need and helped him.  Coincidentally, this morning in church, a special collection was taken up to aid the homeless shelter in our town.  Another case of people helping strangers in need. So, I began thinking today of times when I have been helped by strangers acting as Good Samaritans.  When I was in college, I purchased my first car.  It was a little white Honda Civic.  It was shaped sort of like a potato and was dubbed with the name "Spud" by one of my college friends.  The name stuck and everyone began calling my car Spud.  This picture isn't...

Music Monday - Melting The Blues Away

Image
We went to the Stranahan Theater in Toledo last night to hear the OMEA District 1 High School Honors Concert of the best of this area's high school orchestras, choirs, and bands.  It was a wonderful evening of music.  My son played his upright bass in the orchestra there.  I recorded three of their songs, but I don't have time to upload them to the computer today.  Perhaps I will do that another time. At one point the emcee of the program was laughing about the fact that during the band's performance, some of the other students from the orchestra and choir were backstage dancing to the music on stage.  We in the audience couldn't see them, of course.  He was amused by the fact that the kids were doing a sort of line dance, can-can style, with high kicking legs. It made us wish we could have seen what was going on back there!   A dance with high kicking legs, always makes me think of the big finish to the song, "New York New York" by Frank Sinatr...

Music Monday - I Will

Image
I'm feeling mellow today.  It seems like a good day to play a little bit of the Beatles. Of course, I'm singing along here, "Love you forever and forever.  Love you with all my heart." I Will  (lyrics) Who knows how long I've loved you You know I love you still Will I wait a lonely lifetime If you want me to, I will. For if I ever saw you I didn't catch your name But it never really mattered I will always feel the same. Love you forever and forever Love you with all my heart Love you whenever we're together Love you when we're apart. And when at last I find you Your song will fill the air Sing it loud so I can hear you Make it easy to be near you For the things you do endear you to me Oh, you know, I will I will. Music Monday--Balloon Bass and Box

Image
I realize this is a rather unconventional choice, but it made me smile, and starting out the week with a smile seems like a good idea to me.  So this is my pick for Music Monday today.   I think this is a worthwhile reminder too.  Don't worry about what you don't have--make music with what you have. If you are interested in knowing how he made the balloon bass, click here .  Amazing what can be done with just three balloons. Come join Music Monday and share your songs with us. Music Monday ---Train

Image
My younger son was home sick from school part of last week with the flu.  While he was here sacked out on the couch with a fever and chills, and I was taking his temperature and pushing Tylenol and orange juice at him while trying not to get sick myself, he had VH-1 playing on the television.   The video for the song, "Hey, Soul Sister" by Train came on.  I like it.  It is upbeat and catchy.  That, combined with lyrics that are fun and at times a bit quirky, made it stick in my head.   My son is feeling better and is back to school today.  This seems like a good song to get me moving on a Monday morning.  You can't see me (that's probably a good thing!), but I'm dancing around the living room and singing, "You're the only one I'm dreaming of.  You see, I can be myself now finally, in fact there's nothing I can't be..." Still singing here, "I don't want to miss a single thing you do, tonight."     Happy Monday to you! Come ...

Young Love

Image
My fifteen year old son asked me if I would take him to the flower shop on Saturday. He wanted to get a single white rose for his girlfriend. They have been dating for sixteen months now, and they were celebrating the anniversary of when they met. I said, "So you two have been together for one and one third years now, huh?" "Yeah," he said and grinned. Well...gee...I'm just not ready for this. What's a mother to do, though, in the face of such open, unabashedly giddy love and devotion. I took him to the flower shop, of course. Later that day when his girlfriend came over, she brought with her a miniature pumpkin and two miniature gourds as an "anniversary" gift to him. You would have thought she handed him a million dollars from the smile on his face. A flower, a pumpkin, and some gourds---just small tokens, but they are tokens of young love. As a result of this exchange between my son and his girlfriend, I have the song, "Young Love"...

Music Monday---Knock Knock

Image
This song is sung by Lenka. She is an Australian actress and singer-songwriter perhaps best known for her song, The Show , which I also enjoy. I like her voice. The title of this one is "Knock Knock," but my favorite line in this song is "Nothing works like you." Come join Music Monday and share your songs with us. Music Monday--Try a Little Tenderness

Image
It's Monday morning, and I'm not moving very fast yet. So I thought I'd start the week off slow with a little bit of swaying music. Happy Monday to you! Try a Little Tenderness (lyrics) She may be weary All women do get weary Wearing the same shabby dress And when she's weary Try a little tenderness She may be waiting Just anticipating Things she may never possess And while she's without them Try a little tenderness For it's not just sentimental She has her grief And her cares But a word So soft and gentle Makes it easier to bear You won't regret it All women don't forget it And love is their whole happiness And it's all so easy to try a little tenderness You've gotta try You've gotta hold her You've got to squeeze her You've gotta to try You've got to try And always please her And now you won't regret it You won't regret it Oh Try a little tenderness Come join Music Monday and share your songs with us. They Ask---Music Monday (Elvis Presley)

Image
They Ask "How can you believe in God? How do you know he is there?" "What!?... Can't you smell the bliss of honeysuckle drifting in the air?" "How can you believe in God? How do you know he's true?" "Haven't you seen the colors? The flames of red, the stars of blue?" "How can you believe in Him? Someone you've never seen?" "Just look at all the patterns thousands in red and green." "Creativity, symmetry, design! Oh the fuzzy magic of a single soybean!" * "Can't you see the ocean of ivy splashing against the trees? " "Can't you hear the joy and delight in the voices of kids throwing Frisbees? " "Can't you see the pine trees growing, straight and tall, with the soft carpet of needles underneath them all?" "Can't you see the people walking with the ones they love?" "Can't you hear your feet crunching acorns that have fallen from above?...

Music Monday---How Sweet It Is by James Taylor

Image
Sweet. Very sweet, indeed! Happy Monday to you. How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) sung by James Taylor (lyrics) How sweet it is to be loved by you How sweet it is to be loved by you I needed the shelter of someone's arms and there you were I needed someone to understand my ups and downs and there you were With sweet love and devotion Deeply touching my emotion I want to stop and thank you baby I just want to stop and thank you baby How sweet it is to be loved by you How sweet it is to be loved by you I close my eyes at night Wondering where would I be without you in my life Everything I did was just a bore Everywhere I went it seems I'd been there before But you brighten up for me all of my days With a love so sweet in so many ways I want to stop and thank you baby I just want to stop and thank you baby How sweet it is to be loved by you How sweet it is to be loved by you You were better for me than I was for myself For me, there's you and there ain't nobody else I...

Music Monday---New Moon on Monday

Image
With both the family van and my husband's car needing sudden, unexpected, and expensive repairs this past week, along with the automatic garage door going on the fritz, as well, we have been left feeling a bit overwhelmed and wondering what is going to break next that we can ill afford to have fixed. When it rains, it pours, I suppose. Life goes on. Speaking of rain, it was pouring buckets this morning. With the other vehicles in the shop, and with my husband and older son both at work, it was up to me and the mighty Metro I drive to get young son and his upright bass to his music lesson this morning. I bet you think that an upright bass would not fit into a little Geo Metro like mine. You are wrong. So how did we fit both my 15 year old son and his upright bass into a Geo Metro? Well, we put both the back seat and the front passenger seat down, gently lifted and maneuvered the instrument in through the hatch door in the back (my son did that part), then my son carefully slid ...

Music Monday--I'm In the Mood For Love

Image
"I'm In the Mood For Love" sung by Bryan Ferry. I'm In The Mood For Love (lyrics) I'm in the mood for love Simply because you're near me Funny, but when you're near me I'm in the mood for love Heaven is in your eyes Bright as the stars we're under Oh, is it any wonder? I'm in the mood for love Why stop to think of whether This little dream might fade? Let's put our hearts together Now we are one, I'm not afraid If there's a cloud above If it should rain, we'll let it But for tonight forget it I'm in the mood for love Why stop to think of whether This little dream might fade? Let's put our hearts together Now we are one, I'm not afraid If there's a cloud above If it should rain, we'll let it But, for tonight, forget it I'm in the mood for love Come join Music Monday and share your songs with us. Music Monday---Still by Elvis Costello

Image
Still sung by Elvis Costello These few lines I'll devote To a marvelous girl covered up with my coat Pull it up to your chin I'll hold you until the day will begin Still Lying in the shadows this new flame will cast Upon everything we carry from the past You were made of every love and each regret Up until the day we met There are no words that I'm afraid to hear Unless they are "Goodbye, my dear" Still I was moving very fast But in one place Now you speak my name and set my pulse to race Sometimes words may tumble out but can't eclipse The feeling when you press your fingers to my lips I want to kiss you in a rush And whisper things to make you blush And you say, "Darling, hush Hush Still, still" Come join Music Monday and share your songs with us.
