Happy Mother's Day (Truly Grateful Series)

Image
my sons then and now my mom in her younger days my mom and my sons  This was my first Mother's Day without my Mom.  It didn't seem right to not be able to see her today.  I am very lucky to have had her in my life, though, and I have very happy memories from my childhood and down through the years.  She gave me so much and did so much for me over my lifetime that I can never repay.  All I can do is pay the love she gave me forward to my sons as best I can.  My sons are treasured gifts to me.  I have been richly blessed.  I hope you all had a happy Mother's Day. Lord, for Mother's Day and the relationship it honors between mothers and their children, for my Mom, and for my sons, please let me be truly grateful.

Thank you, Mom!

I have so many good memories of my Mom from when I was a child that I hardly know where to begin when listing them.  She was the glue that held our family together.  She took care of us all.  She was the organizer and the keeper of all the daily details.  She was a stay at home mom, and she was always there for us when we needed her.  She did all the cooking and cleaning and laundry and much of the gardening too.   Every summer she put package after package of corn, peas, green beans, lima beans, and carrots into the freezer for us for over the winter.  She canned tomato juice.  She lined the shelves in the basement with jars of her homemade strawberry and raspberry jam and cherry jelly from the fruits we grew in our yard. She made sure we had a good breakfast each morning before we caught the bus to school and quite often had warm-from-the-oven chocolate chip cookies and a cold glass of milk waiting for us when we came back home.  This after...

Confessions of a Wimpy Mom

Image
At the library where I work, I have noticed a series of books that have become quite popular with the middle school aged kids (especially the boys!).   The books in the "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" series written by Jeff Kinney have been on a lengthy request list for some time now.  It makes me smile to see a kid's face light up when I hand him a book from this series.  More often than not, he has been waiting for the book for a while because it is so popular, and it has been requested by so many other kids just like him.  It always does me good to see kids who are enthusiastic about reading, especially at that age, and especially boys, who often seem less interested in reading than girls.   There are currently four books out in the series and a movie based on the series is in the works and is scheduled to be released April 2, 2010.  Here's a trailer for the upcoming movie.   One interesting fact about the first book in the series is that it was or...

Life in Daisyland

Image
I haven't blogged for a few days so today I'm going to "catch up" all at once and give you a few glimpses of how things have been in "Daisyland" this past week. It was a busy, but fairly quiet and mostly uneventful, week for me. I spent my time visiting my Mom, working at the library, and walking in the park, among the other usual things I do most weeks. The photos above and below are ones of my Mom. I'm not sure of the years they were taken, but I think she was probably in her very early twenties in these pictures, so these pictures were probably taken some time between 55 and 60 years ago. Both of these photos were ones my Dad kept and carried in his wallet for as many years as I can remember. His wallet would wear out, and he'd get a new one, but these pictures were always transferred to the new wallet. On Friday, my brother and his family came up to visit from Dayton. I haven't seen them since last Thanksgiving, so I was glad they coul...

Smiley Sunday--Happy Mother's Day!

Image
We took my Mom out to lunch today. My older son (in the green shirt) was able to come home for the weekend from college, so I got to see both of my boys for Mother's Day. It was a good day. Hope yours was too. If you would like to participate in Smiley Sunday, click the badge below.
