Watched TV: Saw Skinwalkers

Image
January 2010. Watched TV: Saw Skinwalkers (James Isaac, 2006). I usually like werewolf movies, obviously, but this one isn't so hot; in spite of Jason Behr. It has its moments, I guess.

Milan Fashion Week: Moschino Cheap & Chic Fall 2010 Collection

Image
Rosella Jardini's Cheap & Chic fashion show for Milan Fashion Week is not just an ordinary runway show. The guests stood beside the red carpet while models strutted across them. According to Rosella Jardini, the concept of Cheap & Chic's Fall 2010 fashion show is about women with various fashion styles who went out of a hotel. Enjoy the Cheap & Chic's fab fashion show with humor! Source: Style.com

Happiness

Image
Happiness Early morning quiet, a lemony-tangerine  sunrise surprise, orange pekoe  steeping in a cup, you watching me,  with soft brown eyes. You nuzzling my neck. (if only in my mind) Your words that make me laugh, your words that are kind  lift me up like a curtain   in a warm spring breeze. I know that you care. Your presence is there. Feelings I have for you  make me weak   in the knees.    *   *   *   *   * The poem above is my response to a tag from my good friend, Michelle, who writes the blog, Crow's Feet . She tagged me with the Happy 101 meme.  For this meme, I was supposed to list ten things that make me happy.  Instead of a list, I decided to put my thoughts into a poem. If you'd like to write about the things that make you happy and continue this meme, please consider yourself tagged by me and take the logo above back with you to post on your blog.

Watched DVD: Serving Sara

Image
Watched DVD: Serving Sara (Reginald Hudlin, 2002). French title Au Service de Sara . I'd actually seen it before, on a plane I think. Matthew Perry is... well, Matthew Perry. Elizabeth Hurley is as beautiful as ever (favorite quote: once asked by a journalist on the red carpet what her favorite food was, she replied "I don't eat."), but let's face it, she's never going to revolutionize the art of acting. She's not even given many opportunities in this movie to deliver a bit of British Camp. I like her pink Stetson, trailer trash t-shirt and kilt. It's a rather poor comedy, really; very occasionally funny.

Usually I waste no love on the rich. I didn't like him at first.

No 340 - High and Low Director - Akira Kurosawa Like Kurosawa I make mad films, 'k I don't make films but if I did they'd have a samurai . Kurosawa has become eponymous with films about ancient Japan, certainly he is most famous for films such as the 7 samurai. So I was quite surprised to step into this taut and modern (well 70's) thriller. I was also impressed with how effective it is. The film is essentially split into two sections. The first half introduces the dizzying world of the ladies shoe business as Gondo gets into an argument with the other major share owners about the direction in which the company should go. The argument gets quite heated and there is a lot of besmirching of honour (which is still a big thing in Japanese culture) and the group separate on bad terms. Once the board have left, we learn about Gondo's plan. He has invested everything into acquiring enough money to buy a majority share in the company and then he will be able to dictate th

God does not foresake forever. He may punish, yet he will have compassion.

No 348 - Au Hasard Balthazar Director - Robert Bresson Donkeys are hardly the most iconic of animals. Besides their religious undertones, all I can think of is that Pinocchio almost turns into one . It is not an animal which really inspires much excitement. Unfortunately this film doesn't change my view. We follow the life of a donkey, called Balthazar and how he affects the lives of people around them. Namely the following 4 characters: Gerard (Francois Lafarge ) - A big motorbiking bully of a man. Marie (Anne Wiazemsky ) - Who loves Gerard Pierre (Walter Green) - Who loves Marie Arnold (Jean-Claude Guilbert) - The town drunk The film itself seems to look at two things. Cruelty and love. There are a lot of one way relationships in this film and a lot of scenes of abuse. Mainly, it seems, on Balthazar. Arnold seems to personally take offense to the donkey and see him as a factor for his downfall whereas Gerard is just a bastard. As I watched the film I couldn't help put take

Butternut Squash-Potato Soup

Image
My refrigerator runneth over with lidded plastic containers.  Little bits of leftovers... ganache, mincemeat filling (that apparently never goes bad), olives, squash, cooked potatoes, cheese, polenta, pickled jalapenos. This recipe took care of a couple of containers - the squash and potatoes.  You can mash the potatoes as smooth as you'd like, or leave them a little chunky like I do.  I add a little bit of heavy cream at the end just because it was in the refrigerator and am glad that I did.  It added a delicious creaminess - just the touch this soup needed! Butternut Squash-Potato Soup 1 cup grated carrots 1/2 cup diced onion 1 stalk celery, finely diced 3 cloves garlic, pressed 1 link linguica or any sausage, coarsely diced 1 cup cooked and mashed butternut squash 3 medium Gold Yukon potatoes, cooked and mashed to desired consistency 2 cans chicken broth 3 T heavy cream Saute carrots, onions and celery in olive oil until soft, about 15 minutes.  Add garlic and saute additional 3

Went to see Percy Jackson...

Image
February 24, 2010. Went to see Percy Jackson & The Olympians: The Lighning Thief (Chris Columbus, 2010). Columbus was the perfect director for that, obviously. Perfect for children and teenagers 7 to 17. What I don't get, though, is the reason behind all those changes in the script (I mean, differences with the novel). Scriptwriter Craig Titley, what were you thinking? Most of them are totally gratuitous! They don't film better, they don't make for more visual / special effects; they're just useless, and are sure to perturb a great many young readers. The only one I vaguely approve of is the Medusa scene: of course, with those changes Chris Columbus was able to hire divine Uma Thurman and make her LanaTurner half the thing then camp up the second half to my intense delight.

Watching TV series: Sanctuary

Image
Watching TV series: Sanctuary . One has to make do with what one can (how one misses Buffy!) Funny seeing Stargate 's Amanda Tapping with dark hair. She's allowed to be more British here. Canadian Robin Dunne quite charming. Some episodes are more thrilling than others. And the way they integrate historical characters and events sometimes works (Tesla, Jack the Ripper...)

Watched DVD: A Cinderella Story

Image
February 23, 2010. Watched DVD: A Cinderella Story (Mark Rosman, 2004). French title Comme Cendrillon . Cute Texan pop singer / actress Hilary Duff and cute Chad Michael Murray. Perfect for kids. It even announces in its very title that it's going to be the zillionth variation on the Cinderella plot, so you can't say you've been ripped-off. Cute. Won't revolutionize gender roles, won't revolutionize cinema.

Watched DVD: Teeth

Image
January 2010. Watched DVD: Teeth (Mitchell Lichtenstein, 2007). What a pity, this movie could have been a tremendous psychoanalytical film; while targetting teenagers, it could have dealt intelligently with the universal Vagina Dentata myth and spoken volumes about society, sex, gender, the male fear of the "dark continent" and all that. I could have used it in class. Instead, it's just bad, mostly. Nip/Tuck's John Hensley isn't bad as the creepy brother I guess.

Gratitude

Can you believe it? This was the last week of February! Come Monday... March! Yowzah! It's been a good week, albeit Long. Here are the little things I'm thankful for: * Talking to my nephew on Tuesday - his 17th birthday!!! Crazy... * Being silly and laughing with Dannon * Red Machine Naked Juice * The very happy yellow lab in my neighborhood who won't go anywhere without his teddy bear * My little pocket calendar to keep me straight, even on days my brain doesn't work * Working out every day this week {HUGE accomplishment for me} * The daffodils Dannon brought me - daffodils are my absolute favorite!!! I'm so glad it's the weekend finally. I have no plans yet, but I really hope to have a little mini adventure. Hope you're all having lovely Fridays and try to do at least one nice thing for yourself this weekend!
