If you think about it, it's not all too surprising that some of these "professionals" are getting so worked up and sulky over this release. The notion that "pro editing" can belong to just about anyone, rather than an exclusive circle of elites, poses an existential crisis. Apple's re-thinking of editing is also a re-thinking of what it means to be "professional". The announcement sheds light on a future in which their "advanced", learned techniques are no longer advantageous. The "industry pros" are facing the plight of impending impotence. It's not something anyone would really openly admit, but I think they're feeling a bit naked, stripped of their status.

Who can blame them for being pissy?

Being a professional myself I remember having those fears a few years ago. In fact we lost a large client because one of the employees thought that her high school son could do the same level of work that we did. If that were true I would say shame on us, in reality the client came back to us a few months later when the kid couldn't actually produce the same level of edit quality and creativity that we do.

The price drop doesn't bother me one bit. I think if anything it does open up the door for a teenager to start learning on high end software, then by the time they've finished college and have a sense of who they are as an editor they'll be a welcome, proficient addition, to someones company. I think it serves everyone in the end.

    Sligthly off-topic:

Judging from history what do you thing, when would iLife '07 be available?

I am seriously considering to wait a little longer (the 1.83 model has left me strongly disappointed).

So I thought I can wait a little longer and buy when iLife 07 will be included in the purchase (to make up for the lousy specs )

    id guess Macworld in january

Meh -- there was similar consternation with the original Mac, LaserWriter and PageMaker from the professional printers. And as then, it still is at the end of the day just a tool. The real talent is in how the tool is wielded.

Those that have at true talent have little to fear. Those that are more marginal... well, time marches on.

I hate stereoscopic 3D. OK, it's quite fun at the cinema with your friends on a night out, but it's far from perfect. I really can't see Apple implementing the technology in any of their products. It's not polished enough for them, not good enough for the 'Apple experience'. Like AMOLED (as it currently stands), Apple will probably leave it to the other guys to play around with, waiting for either something better or the technology to mature. In this case, however, I think stereoscopic 3D is a dead end.

imagine let's say that wal mat due to this apple deal with all studios will make a statemnet saying we lost 10% or our revenues so we will lay off 10% of our employess to cover for the losses.!!

now what do you do in this case?
it's not a free world after all....

Wal*Mart losing 10% of their revenue would still leave them a VERY profitable company... and firing that many employees would probably cause them to close some stores... which would result in further loss of profit.

If Wal*Mart lost 10% of their revenue by movie purchases alone, they would have to concentrate harder on other things.

    Something else confuses me though...

Wal*Mart caters to the lower income families... who likely don't have high-speed internet and are, thus, EXTREMELY unlikely to purchace movies from the iTS, lest they want to be downloading for 3 days straight. Those people will go to the local Wal*Mart and buy the same movie from the $5.50 bargain bin. Sleazy customers are happy; Wal*Mart is happy. What do they have to be complaining about?

Man, I love that bin. I've found so many awesome movies in there.......... like Total Recall. Okay, so maybe not THAT awesome.

Madoff wasn't in the government. That had nothing to do with the government (other than showcasing the joke our regulation system has become) so bringing it up doesn't even make sense.

As for the G20, do things like that happen often in Canada?

Also, we need to stop flip flopping between talking about Canada and the USA, or at least do a better job of distinguishing the two when putting numbers out there as it gets confusing.

I only used Madoff as an example as to how 65 Billion could easily just get squandered and disappear. The Government crooks seem not to get caught as easily as him.

As for flip flopping Canada and the US ... I think both countries are similar as to how our Governments waste money.

IMO the answer to our countries sinking financially rests with reckless spending and the answer is not drastically cutting the big services like Military, Education, Healthcare and such.

There is too much Government feeding at the trough on both sides of the border.

With the supply being so choked up with demand already why, why why add yet another retailer. I know this might sound silly but having an Apple product is slowly loosing it's luster, loosing that "I am part of special club" feeling, that "I own something that isn't mainstream" feeling. That doesn't really exist anymore. Before you know it you will be able to by iPhones and iPads at in fancy kiosk/vending machines at airports... Wait they already do, oh Apple what have you become?

Answering my own question I am sure Apples strategy is own the tablet marketplace before anyone can take even the smallest bite out of it. They have legitimate competition coming down the line and want to put a tablets on every shelf and in every hand before anyone can catch up. It's not the slow burn the iPod or iPhone used to be it's a full on retail assault complete with carpet bombing.

Charging decisions are made by people, including police and prosecutors. A discussion about the likelihood of committing a crime is only about claims about racial differences. I'm not aware of any legitimate study that any race is more or less likely to commit crimes.
Neither am I. This is not about any race, as in all black people in the world. This is about people who reside in London, England. Just because the crime statistics of a limited geographic area don't fit your world of political correctness, it doesn't mean they are incorrect as in inconsistent with reality.

Criminology and Legal Sociology can be interesting, but only as long as there is a fair and open approach to the subject.
As a former public defender I will respond on behalf of all the court appointed attornies out there. Bite me.
    I rest my case.

Wrong again. I am focusing on Africans because that's the topic you created to discuss. Moving the goalposts again.

No one is moving the goal posts, you're not answering my questions. I'm just comparing to prove a point. No one else is whining about past discrimination except blacks. Everyone was discriminated at some point. They've all moved past it.

My primary basis for debate is fact. Yours is uncited assertion, accusation and "common knowledge" without any basis in fact. You are hiding behind weasel-words.

Nein. What uncited assertion? I provided you with facts and statistics. You just don't seem to like them and don't want to face the facts. But that's ok.

Whereas you'd prefer to prattle on about trailer parks...in the US. Fine, let's talk other countries - but what on earth is a racial history? I challenge you to find a single country with a significant black population that has no history of prejudice.

Prattle on about trailer parks? Yeah because you made the assertion that poor white areas are as dangerous as poor black areas. Which is BS. Why should i find a country without a history of racial prejudice? Again, all the other races have moved past it except blacks. Beside the fact, many blacks in the UK are immigrants and their ancestors didn't even deal with racial prejudice in the UK. So figure that one out.

Taken last night on the way home from the pub. I'm still getting used to the Epson R-D1 I bought last month. Rangefinders are certainly a different way of working, but I really like the feel in the hand and the output (with a bit of processing to get a slightly more film-like look)

Whoever said that was hard to understand? Not me!

This is a big problem (and has been for 30+ years)...that everything we buy in the USA is made somewhere else...USA no longer manufactures except for our junky USA cars.

Sure...at some point when this all started decades ago, it WAS cheaper to build certain things outside the US...but then everyone got on the bandwagon and now it's the norm. (Thanks politicians!)

The "it's cheaper to build outside the US!" is a bogus argument and has become an evil of our own doing.

If it costs X to build in the US, please don't tell me it costs 1/10th of X to build, import, pay taxes, blah blah blah, to get it back into your company's hands.

We can all agree that some things, yes, are easier and/or cheaper to build outside the US for a variety of reasons. Our USA system needs some serious overhauls to get stuff to be built back in the US other than screws and toilet paper.

You are still not getting it. It does cost a fraction to build things outside the US.

The US minimum wage is $8.25 per hour in many states. The minimum wage in a country like the Philippines is about $0.71.

Because of labor unions and their regulations, a manufacturer typically needs to pay significantly above minimum wage anyway, PLUS benefits like health insurance cost way more. In the Philippines (which I bring up because I employ people there) health care cost about $10 per worker per month. Here in the US it can cost several hundred.

Payroll taxes are no picnic either. Typically, in the US the total cost of hiring a worker when you factor in payroll, admin, benefits, etc. is that worker's salary + 25%.

Labor is one of the biggest expenses any company has. Manufacturing requires a lot of labor too. You need people to operate machines, fix machines, load products, even assemble certain items by hand in some cases.

So you can easily do the math. Where in one country you can get people for a dollar an hour to work and in other you get them for $10-$12 an hour, clearly the cost to operate in expensive country is 10x as much. That means you have to raise your prices that much more.

Now all total manufacturing expenses aren't 10x more, since raw materials will typically cost the same anywhere in the world and there are some overhead expenses as well, but that labor difference is still huge when you consider a company like FoxConn that has 920,000 employees.

Moving to the US would mean they would effectively have labor costs as if they were hiring 10 million employees instead of 1 million. You can't say that wouldn't make them raise their prices several fold to compensate for that.

You can run the math yourself based on their number of employees, average wages in China, average wages in the US and their profit margins.

Anyone who thinks it costs the same or only slightly more to produce here is living in a dream world.

I'm hoping this is an April Fool and someone just got their date a bit wrong. I really don't like 3D and I absolutely hate the 3D bandwagon that seems determined to ram the technology down our throats. It's terrible. My eyes are not fooled by 3D effects. I'm hoping this is just an effort to get everyone to buy an iPad 2.

Personally, I don't believe the story.

That's the problem. There's no way I'm having a white laptop.

My friend calls them toilet seats. But he has a white one too. Trust me, Apple screwed up with the black finish. It's stupid matte paint that absorbs grease marks, and *does* peel off. I had both issues.

Your only other option then is a MacBook Pro. Worth it IMO, but you might not want to pay the premium.

There seem to be varying reports of the serial numbers affected, and Apple's site seems dead right now. I'm hoping my battery IS affected, because I was getting close to ordering a new battery, as my year-and three month old battery is down to 25% of it's original capacity after 440 load cycles.

The site was up briefly and claimed 4-6 weeks for the new battery to ship. That's a LONG time to go without a battery.

Yea, but they send you the new one while you use the old one. And considering the capacity of your old battery, you probably live off the power adapter a lot anyway.

And they've probably got to manufacture a bunch of new batteries for this.

I don't see how adjusting the UI at the last minute could be any sort of OK. Do you really want developers using the Tiger finder for the next 7 months, and then all of the sudden Apple goes BAM (Emeril Style) and puts in a brand new finder.

I want those developers to be able to integrate the finder with their apps. If all Apple is doing is adjusting some colors or icons or something, then we shouldn't be excited about the new finder in the first place. But if Apple is going to do some major revamping, shame on them for keeping it a secret.

People need time to work with it and find all the kinks, especially if it is dramatically different from Tiger.
I understand your point. I do, however, feel that Apple has more of the platform's long-term best interests at heart, versus the developers delay of a UI for 5 months.

If we're to assume the "Top Secret to prevent photocopying" theory, then these next 5 months are more crucial to Apple's development than the platform developers. Come January, Apple might spill all the details of the (currently speculative) Finder, and developers have from then until release date to incorporate it. Sure, it's a delay of 5 months, but think big-picture. If Apple's secretiveness prevents Vista from incorporating Leopard UI traits, it's worth the wait to make Leopard appear further ahead.*

*We all know this is a rumor site, but the above is purely speculation on my part.

jeez, 8 whole mega pixels??? Wow fruit, welcome to you sure are being generous here. My android phone has 8mp and it came a full year ago... The pictures it takes are pretty sweet compared to my friends i(paidtomuch)phone4. I'm not trying to bash anyone but I see a lot of fruit boys on here saying they are OK with whatever fruity says. Ya'll really need to revolt or something because that's not right. I guess once the specs are finalized, we will see a 10+ mega pixel camera on either android or windows phone? I have no idea..

I will suggest that perhaps a physical side camera button like the Windows phone has for taking pictures would great because with a touchscreen it is hard to tell if you took a picture in a noisy environment when you can hear the click.

    That is all.

    PCP
You do understand that a ton of 8 MP cameras on a phone has been compared to the iPhone 4's 5 MP camera and the iPhone's camera still came out on top, right?
