Winter and Blog Friends (Truly Grateful Series)

Cassie from the blog, In Amazing Graceland has very kindly honored me by passing on to me the Honest Scrap award which is to go to blogs she thinks are brilliant in either content or design.

Thank you, Cassie! You make me smile.

There are rules that go along with this award which you can read at Cassie's blog if you like, but anyone who knows me knows that I don't always follow the rules.

One rule is that I am to write ten honest things about myself. I can tell you that I honestly am NOT fond of winter (as most of you probably already know).

So this is my own personal twist on some honest scrap. Here are ten reasons why winter is my least favorite season.

1. The cold, dry air of winter makes my hair and clothes full of static electricity. I have long hair and when it is full of static, it flies all about making it stand on end, stick to my face and clothes, and just in general be a nuisance to deal with.

The static actually is everywhere this time of year. Just walking across a carpeted room can make you so charged that if you touch something or someone, you can get quite a shock. My poor little dog Max got quite a spark on his nose the other day just from me reaching my hand out to him. Light switches, telephones, and electronic gizmos can also give you quite a static shock when you touch them. Sparks are flying!

2. Walking through the snow or ice tracks it into the house. I am constantly mopping up the melted puddles from shoes in the wintertime. When I go to the store the entrance ways there have slush on the floor and the floor mats are soggy from all the snow that is trudged in there by customers. Pushing a grocery cart full of groceries out to the car through several inches of rutted snow on the parking lot is quite a chore too.

3. The dry air and cold temperatures of winter make my skin dry and my lips chapped. I am constantly applying and reapplying Chap-stick and hand lotion.

4. I hate to shovel snow. It is back-breaking work and sometimes seems like such a thankless task. Oftentimes, as soon as you are done, it snows again and you have to turn around and do it again. I'd rather mow the grass in the summertime or rake leaves in the fall any day than shovel snow.

5. Winter weather makes my daily walk through the park that I enjoy in the other seasons of the year either very miserable or completely impossible. The cold temperatures and/or icy, snowy walking conditions force me to drive to the local Y to walk on the indoor track there instead.

6. Salt that is used on the roads and sidewalks here in the wintertime to melt the snow and ice to make them safer to travel and walk upon gets all over everything. It gets all over the sides of your car and increases rust in the metal. It gets on your shoes and ruins them. It can cause pain to the paws of your four footed animal friends if they walk through it too.

7. Frigid temperatures sometimes make my car not start. When the temperature starts dropping down to the single digits or even to negative integers, which it often does here in the wintertime, it is a gamble when I climb into my car whether the thing will actually start or not. Yes, I always carry jumper cables with me in my car.

8. I hate that everything takes more time. It takes more time to let the car warm up before you can drive it. It takes a while for the heater to be able to warm the inside of the car to any degree of comfort too. With constantly changing and often unsafe road conditions, it takes more time to go places because it is a necessity to drive slower on snow and ice to avoid landing in the ditch or rammed into another car. You have to wear more layers of clothing to keep warm. Of course, you also have to wash all those clothes, which make the laundry take more time to do as well.

9. Ice, although pretty to look at, can cause real problems. Underfoot and on the roadways it makes walking and driving treacherous adventures. Icicles that form on the roof and above doorways can come crashing down upon your head if you don't watch out for them.

10. I get tired of being cold all the time. Muscles and joints stiffen and don't function as well in the cold weather as they do in the warmer weather. It's more difficult to move around when you have to wear several clumsy layers of clothing, too. How is a girl supposed to dance, after all? Some days you gotta DANCE!

Ecclesiastes 3:1 To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under heaven.

Lord, for winter---because it makes me appreciate spring all the more, let me be truly grateful. =D

Speaking of being grateful, Cliff from the blog, Wixy's Gone Bananas, has also honored me with an award. He has passed on to me the Attitude and Gratitude Award for having a blog that shows great attitude and/or gratitude. It is also called the lemonade stand award because it is to be awarded to those who take lemons and make lemonade. Thank you, Cliff. This trait is one that I really do try to live and put into practice. In fact, I consider "In Everything Give Thanks" to be my motto. If you'd like to read the rules that went along with this award, you can read them at the link for Cliff's blog above.

I would like to pass this Attitude/Gratitude Lemonade Stand Award on to the following people.

Terri of Clay Hill Farm

Cassie of In Amazing Graceland

Dorothy of Counting My Blessings

Graciel of Evenstar Art

To those who I have passed these awards on to, I completely understand if you would prefer not to participate. I know that some bloggers would rather not participate in awards, tags, and memes.

Lord, for blogger friends who daily remind me of all that I have to be thankful for and who entertain me, make me think, and make me laugh to help me forget about the cold weather outside, let me be truly grateful.
