Stayin' Alive With an Empty Box of Ice Cream (Truly Grateful Series)

My older son was home for the past two weeks for his Christmas break from college. It was so good to have him home for a while.

While he was home, we were going someplace in the car when the song below came on the radio. He began singing and knew every word. It made me laugh. This song came out as a single in 1977, the year I graduated from high school. I sang along with him, of course.

"I didn't know you knew this song," I said to him.

"Everybody knows this song, Mom. It's a classic. It's part of our culture."

"I didn't know you liked disco," I said next.

"Sure, I like disco. It's good stuff. I don't know why it died."

(Well, he is MY son, after all! Poor kid--- HA HA HA!)

I explained to him that it hadn't died, that it was still around, and that it was "Stayin' Alive" just like the song, but he didn't seem to believe me.

So this song is for my son.

It's funny, people always talk about what a tough job it is to be a parent. They never tell you what a tough job it is to stop being a parent.

Of course, you never really "stop" being a parent, but at some point, it is necessary to let your children go off on their own and become the adults they were destined to be.

So, he returned to his dorm room today, back to his classes again tomorrow.

I was at home here, already missing him and not feeling much like dancing. Then I found this in the freezer.

As you can see, it is a box of ice cream. Or, it WAS a box of ice cream! There are, perhaps, two small spoonfuls of chocolate ice cream left here in the corner of the box.

Now, who would put an all-but-empty box of ice cream back in the freezer like this? My son, the one who just returned to college, would, that's who. He is notorious for doing this. Finding this made me laugh.

It's nice to know some things never change.

Lord, for music shared by generations, for empty ice cream boxes and other things that serve as reminders of those we love, and for a son who is, so far, doing just fine finding his way in the world, please let me be truly grateful.
