Ice, Ice, Baby

Yesterday was the first "official" day of winter, but it has felt like winter here for quite some time. This little bird sought refuge from the cold air and brisk wind on top of the post that supports the awning over our back stoop. Even there, it didn't seem like a very warm spot for him to be.

There is a bird house over here in my neighbor's yard.

It doesn't look very warm over there either.

It doesn't look like it is very well insulated and it is coated in ice.

There are some rolls of wire fencing on top of their compost bin. Ice is covering it too, of course.

I liked the way the sun shines through the fencing making the ice on it sparkle from this angle looking down through the middle of it.

The weight of the ice that formed over the helicopter maple seeds still in the trees is making them fall to the ground. There are little clumps of these ice-covered seeds all over the top of the snow in our yard as a result.

Landscape rocks out front are covered with both ice and snow.

This is how my neighbor's Rose of Sharon bush looked last summer.

This is how it looks today.

Remember that sneaky bunny hiding in my neighbor's garden last summer?

Here's the view from that spot today.

This past fall, we had mountains of leaves piled down by the street at the end of our driveway.
Now we have mountains of snow.

The view looking down my street.

The sun is peeking out a bit today although it is still bitterly cold. It is currently 4 degrees but there is a windchill around 20 below. The sun is shining on the ice that coats the tree branches and the telephone and utility wires overhead making them sparkle as if they were coated with diamonds.

This is what the road in front of my house looks like. Snow has been packed down solid with layers of ice on top of it. The result is a very thick layer of ice over the surface. The main roads here are cleared off better than this and are safer to travel. We live on a small side street that doesn't get much traffic or attention from the city street crews.

We haven't lost our electric power here yet although some other areas have. Ours has flickered a few times, but hasn't gone off longer than a second or two.

Icicles hang from the top of our house.
