Grinchy Weather

The Grinch arrived in the form of another ice storm for us today. My brother and his family were scheduled to come to my house this morning for a Christmas brunch family get-together. They had traveled about half the way here from their home in Dayton when we got a phone call. The roads were very treacherous, and they had decided to turn around and return to their home rather than risk driving on the ice and continuing to make the trip here. Unfortunately, by the time we got the call, the breakfast casserole was already in baking.

The fruit was already prepared and chilling in the refrigerator.

The cinnamon rolls had been baked and iced.

Nuts and sweets had been set out.

The Santa and Elf hats were at the ready for whoever wanted to wear them.

Gifts had been bought and wrapped and placed under the tree.

So we were all prepared for a party with no guests.

Not to fear. My sons called some friends to come over and help us consume some of the extra food. (Teenage boys like to eat!! HA HA!) Then after eating, they sat around and watched a bit of Mystery Science Theater laughing and having a great time. Christmas cheer came anyway in spite of the Grinchy weather outside.

My brother and his family made it safely back to their home in Dayton. Although I wish we could have seen them today, I was relieved to get their phone call when they got back to their home. The presents under the tree will wait until we can reschedule another day. This is no small feat considering we will be juggling it around everyone's work schedules and school and college schedules.

All things considered, the risk of being on the ice covered roads and endangering the lives of family members was not worth it just to have a get-together.

After the ice storm from a few days ago, we had some rain. Between the ice and the rain, a great many winged maple seeds have been knocked from our trees out front littering the snow in the front yard as you can see in the photo below. I guess you could say we had a white and brown Christmas.

Many tree branches are down all over town too. Luckily, the ones in our yard are mostly smaller ones and easy to take care of. Tonight the weatherman is predicting a dense fog advisory for our area.

I'm scheduled to work tomorrow. I'm not exactly looking forward to the morning drive even though it is fairly short. Ice on the roads and dense fog are not a good combination for driving.

The following song comes to mind. Slip Slidin' Away by Paul Simon. He's backed here by the Oak Ridge Boys.

I hope you all are keeping safe and warm wherever you are.

Oh, and even with the help from neighborhood teenage boys, we still have brunch leftovers. Is anybody hungry?
Put your ice skates on and come on over. I'll serve you up a bit of leftover Christmas cheer.
