"When Did He Grow To Be So Tall?"

Image
My husband and older son flew to Florida last week because my son had applied at Palm Beach Atlantic University there and had an interview scheduled with them.  I had to work at the library and my younger son had school, so we stayed at home with the pets.  The interview went very well, and they let him know the next day that he had been accepted.  He was (and still is) quite excited and happy.   I thought I'd share some of the pictures they took while they were down there.  I left the pictures in the smaller size so as not to overwhelm anyone's browser, but you can click on any to enlarge them if you wish.  Of course, while they were there, they spent a little time on the beach and saw a few sights. They wanted me to see what the temperatures were there. Thumbs up!  The interview went well.  Time for a break. A silly pose for the camera--I have no idea where he gets that from! Oh yeah, now I remember where he gets that from. This is me, the smili...

An Open Letter to Them Entities We Affectionally Describe As 'Fanboys'

My Dears, A great thing once said: "Mama knows , child." And this is true. Mama does know. And so do I. For years, you've felt scourged. Cast out. Abandoned by your saviors before you were even born, left to cling to the past properties for which you once thrived. Star Wars fanfiction, deviantART sketches of Uhura and Scully doing The Biz. You've been lonely. You've been left dry. Presenting: Sucker Punch . Hot chicks who put fetchingly, one who could genuinely kick your ass, one who could maybe help, one with a bitchin' haircut (okay, the same one), one with a Lolita sense of attire, one with awkward crossover appeal, one who stands around and, I don't know, flies airplanes in giant Tamagatchis. Trench warfare, WWI, army jets vs. airplanes, ninjas, samurais, zombie Nazis, a train populated entirely by robot coppers, machine guns, brothels, sexay outfits, swords, vaguely Polish doctors/madams, wooden dialogue, big anime eyes. I don't give you ...

Homemade Ricotta

Image
The recipe for these cookies included a container of Ricotta. I knew I wanted to make the Ricotta instead because it is so easy and tastes so much better than store-bought. The hardest part of making Ricotta is waiting for the milk to come to a simmer. Patience is not my middle name. Here's what you do: Put 8 cups of whole milk into a large pan. Add one teaspoon of salt. When the milk is at the simmering point, add 3 tablespoons of lemon juice. Give it a stir and let it sit for two minutes while the curds form. Scoop the curds into a lined colander (I use clean, rinsed Handi Wipes) and let drain for 5 minutes. PRINT RECIPE You might be interested in these recipes, too! #91: September

Image
A loves B. B loves C and is good friends with A. A has a crush on C but C is a self-obsessed writer who can't care about A or B. This one sentence broadly captures the essence of two-thirds of all scripts Woody Allen has written in his lifetime. What still makes him special enough to have won more screenwriting Oscar nominations that any other in history, is his inventiveness in conjuring up a context for A, B and C that would be funnily unique. To cite a few examples, if there's a murder in it, it's a Manhattan Murder Mystery . If there's a tribute to Casablanca, it's a Play it again, Sam. . If it's about his shot on the concept of the seven-year itch in marriages, it's a Husbands and Wives. And if it's about a daughter who is trying to emerge from the spotlight of a flamboyant actress mother, it's a September. . Made in the mid-1980's, a time when Woody Allen was at his most prolific self, the movie tells us the story of Lane (Mia Farrow), a m...

Mary-Louise Parker Wallpapers

Image
Southern-bred Mary-Louise Parker , from Fort Jackson, South Carolina, was born on August 2, 1964, the youngest of the family's brood. She showed potential in her teens and majored in acting in her college years, graduating from the North Carolina School of the Arts. She decided to test the waters in New York, and after work on the off-Broadway stage in the late 1980s, made her Broadway debut with "Prelude to a Kiss" in 1990, where she won the Theatre World Award, the Clarence Derwent Award and a Tony nomination. Films and TV quickly followed. She provided both poignant and amusing moments as the token femme friend to a group of gay men in the AIDS drama Longtime Companion (1989), but really caught fire with her feisty, standout performance in Fried Green Tomatoes (1991), holding her own against such female powerhouses as Jessica Tandy, Kathy Bates and Mary Stuart Masterson. Dubbed by some as the "long-suffering girl next door", she played such noble miserables a...

Jim Carrey was born in Newmarket, Ontario, Canada on January 17th, 1962. Anyone who has seen his work can surmise that Carrey has been a performer ever since he was very young. Carrey’s first paid performance work came in the form of stand-up comedy in Toronto, Canada. Carrey made his debut comedy performance at Yuk-Yuk’s as a star was beginning to form. Suffering difficult times in his adolescence and having to work eight hours after school to help his family pay the bills, Carrey eventually dropped out of High School and moved to Los Angeles in 1979. In Los Angeles Carrey landed a spot at The Comedy Store where he was signed for a year by Rodney Dangerfield. Carrey got his first acting break in 1983 playing the role of Bobby Todd in Copper Mountain. Looking to diversify a bit and make some extra cash Carrey worked as a cartoonist in the 1984 animated series The Duck Factory. The show didn’t do well but it gave Carrey some desperately needed confidence to pursue his acting ca...

I feel a pang of longing just looking at this photo again. *Whimper* Scallops with Pea Puree, Pancetta and Gremolata courtesy of Amy Ingredients 1/3 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest 2 medium shallots, finely chopped 3 ounces diced pancetta 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 teaspoon minced garlic 2 cups frozen early sweet peas, thawed 1 cup chicken broth 12 medium sea scallops, patted dry and seasoned with salt and pepper 1 tablespoon butter Method For the gremolata: in a small bowl combine the parsley, lemon zest, and one tablespoon of shallot.
