For a long time, I have had this urge to be self employed but personal reasons and the immigration system was a deterrent factor for me in turning this into a reality. Now that I have an EAD, I would like to reexplore this idea and wanted to know if there are any entrepreneurial organizations that I could become a member of that will help me network with like minded people. I have heard of TiE and am getting to know more about this organization. If any of you are members, feedback on how it has helped you will help a lot of people planning to join. Are there any other clubs/orgs that help people like me can bounce ideas off of and help bring together like minded people under the same roof?

PS: I had plans of pursuing an MBA for the sole purpose of networking. Unfortunately, this is not something I can do at this point of time.

I didn't find what I am looking for.
I already have a lawyer and the ONLY reason I want to file myself is because I am fed up in chasing lawyers, my company etc. They don't respond in time and anyways I am preparing all my documents my self and guiding lawyer also.
So, I am thinking to file myself.

I am never happy with my footer and still am not happy with it; I wish kirupa allowed music because transition effect like the ones in my footer went to a techno track but I took it out before I published it :*(, so I will most likely update it later today and a totally maxed out version on monday. Just signing and sending the last page in the 485 which doesnt have much Data .you can save a lot of time. You can verify online the data entry work done by the para-leagl and you are good to go and save couple of days ..i moved to a small firm ( from a over priced attorney ) and he was quite good. My forms are ready to pickup by Fedex in the evening from Attorney's office
Well you have a option to hire your own attorney and get things done the way you like.... But, In my case, like many other I have to get my paper work done by the immigration attorney's part of my company in-house legal department and they are pretty good at getting things done, but not at the time farme you want to get things done.
In my case all the documents must be sitting at my attorney's desk with all the requried docs, etc.. They just need to attach the employment letter, checks and review/ship it... But have no clue when this will be done. Hope it is within the first week. Just got one email that they understand the urgenecy and will do at the earliest. No other updates.

And dont forget that teacher's H1 also comes under the cap. You would need to get interviewed for a position and get an offer before April 1st, so that application can be received at USCIS on April 1st.

The only way to avail of Masters H1 cap is to have US Masters degree.
Some schools also do J1 for teachers. Try VIF program at www.vifprogram.com
Once you get into the school system you can also go for a masters degree and if the school principle wants to keep you, HR can file for your H1. All that is possible if you immediately file for a Home Country Requirement waiver.
It sounds complicated, but for teachers this may be the only open route.

I spoke with the lawyer. She asked me to get an affidavit stating the arrest reason and also what happened. She will send this as soon she gets my receipt number.
I am not having any case/docket number since this happened 4 years back.
Lawyer is saying this should be ok and this falls under misdemeanor.
Any suggestion?
If it's a misdemeanor, you should find the case/docket number from the court and get the expungement record.. also give INS all the evidences.. if all is present, you won't have any problem. and send it to INS sooner so you save time on RFE too.

Hello Friends,
I am planning to apply Canada PR... here is my status...
Filed 485... currently working on EAD... no H1 any more... employer didn't extend it...
1. Should i qualify IELTS to prove english language ability... inspite of having 18 yrs of education with medium of instruction as english?
2. Since i do not have h1 any more and am on PAROLE status.... will it be difficult for me to prove that i have "real intent" of moving to Canada after getting PR?
I would appreciate any one who can throw some light on this.

Check out venture fund organizations in your area (such as sdvg.org). Also prominent universities such as Duke/Stanford/UPenn have Startup Challenges (google duke/stanford/wharton startup challenge).
The first thing you need to do though is to figure out what you want to do and what you are good at. You need to define a field such as biotech, CAD, supply chain etc and network with the people in this segment (www.linkedin.com is one source). But you have to be very careful when you apprach these people. Dont sound impatient and understand that they are busy people. If you are from IIT/MIT dont flaunt it. No one cares.
Coming to the second point, you may start a company but you need to be willing to give command to someone else, if needed. You may be a super techie but running a business requires different skills (soft skills and business skills). So move out of the CEO chair, if needed. It is here where I see greatest difficulty with Tech people. They get into love of the tech they developed and think that customers would line up for the better mouse trap they built. Unfortunately that rarely happens.

My 140 is Approved from Company A.I haven't filed my 485 yet.
My H1 6 Yr period ends in Mar 2009.I am planning to move to company B and request a 3 yr extn based on my approved 140(with Company A).
My qn is what if company A cancels my 140?
If I get my 3yr H1 extn approved (before 140 cancellation) will my status be valid?

I have met my rep. He took the letter etc but nothing happens after that. Starting a new campaign to the USCIS director doesn't dilute the issue, rather it makes our case stronger, this way we are telling them we are really really troubled...
I think rather than a new campaign which asks members to send postal mail we should have one clear and nicely written letter where members can put their signatures or vote electronically (I guess something like this exists) ..this letter (with thousands of votes / signature) can then be sent to various organizations and important people (president, congress, realtors, lobbyists etc etc).
I guess the main point to say would be the long waiting times, inefficient USCIS etc due to which lot of immigrants are going back to their home countries (therby leading to more outsourcing), lot of immigrants are not making big financial purchases (buying homes etc) etc etc
footnote - The reason I bring housing is US always speeds up GC processing whenever they face a crisis - from what I have heard in 70's when they needed civil engineers and doctors - they would give them GC's very quickly ..whichever financial news you read - the bottom line is no one is buying houses - in legal immigrants case - why the heck would they if they dont know if they will be able to stay here permanently :-D

I can't help but notice that progress at TSC.
They were processing July 16, 2007 2 - 3 months back.
One fine day, they updated dates saying that they processed till June 16, 2007. (-ve by a month)
Last month, they made progress till June 23, 2007.
Since last month, they made a progress of one day - June 24, 2007.
Is this correct? or I am a brain dead person? unable to understand CIS processing dates, particulary going backwards really baffles me.:(

They then say in the processing website that the oldest case they have worked on among these is july 8th. The following month, the priority date becomes May 1st 2005, so now they have to pull the cases whose priority dates are between January and May and add them to the processing queue. Some of these cases will have receipt dates earlier than July 8th, therefore the processing date this month can rightfully move back to reflect that.
But of course we also know USCIS doesnt follow a consistent process in pulling cases.

I am a CDN citizen, so I know it a bit better.
:) I believe you... for me tax treaty is a 'nice-to-have', but the dual standards of taxation vs living status is my issue.
Taxation on consumption is my preference, but of course, that would be too logical for politicians and bureaucrats... ;)
