Went to see Tomboy

The Politics of Passing. May 29, 2011. R and I went to see Tomboy (Céline Sciamma, 2011). Totally indispensable for Gender Studies specialists. All my postgrads should go see it. Alas, it is a French movie. So as such it's got an appalling sense of timing. Really bad editing. The scenes that should have been developed are too short, and some scenes are unspeakably long! The actress is unbelievable: it is when her mother makes her wear a dress that she seems to be in drag. Some really excellent elements, like, how do you manage to PASS when wearing a tight-fitting swimming costume (no spoiler here).

I was in sixth form when it came out, and was a student of 'Theatre Studies', so there was naturally a lot of talk about this overtly theatrical piece. However, I was not convinced that I would enjoy it, it looked overtly soppy, a chicks film. Finally I was convinced to go and see it (Tom Done, who was in the year above and who was utterly terrifying, though who is now a good friend, won me over by stating the line I have used as a title. Surely a film MUST be good if it features unconscious Argentinians and cross dressing dwarfs!).
